My husband and I just built our first home this past winter and, although we’ve both worked in the residential construction and real estate industry for the better part of the past decade, we found that we now have a stronger appreciation for the process having gone through it ourselves. We wanted to put together a 10 step process to help potential buyers make a smooth transition.

Here are 10 steps to consider as you move forward:

  1. Evaluate your current living situation.
  2. Get pre-approved with a reputable lender.
  3. Define what you’re looking for in a new home.
  4. Explore builder options.
  5. Contract, pricing & allowances.
  6. Change orders & addendums.
  7. Design meetings.
  8. Scheduled walk trough’s throughout the build.
  9. Utility transfers, insurance & closing.
  10. Warranty & maintenance.

The homebuilding process is exciting, rewarding, lots of fun and, full disclosure, little bit of work!
